The Ontario Medical Association predicts that there will be at least 5,800 premature deaths each year in Ontario due to air-pollution related illnesses. Children, the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions are most vulnerable to poor air quality.

Many factors contribute to air quality. While transportation is the largest single contributor to air pollution, electricity generation and manufacturing processes also contribute. Due to the wide-spread nature of air pollution, there are a number of programs the City of Vaughan is involved with to address air quality.

Did you know?

The word "smog" was coined in 1905 and is a compound of the words smoke and fog.

The City of Vaughan is part of the GTA Clean Air Council. As a member of the Clean Air Council and as part of its ongoing commitment to reducing smog, air pollution and greenhouse gases, the City of Vaughan participates in the Smog Summit.
