WATER

Conservation

As of May 19th, all of York Region's municipalities are under a Water Conservation Notice, meaning that residents must follow local outdoor water-use bylaws until September 2nd.

Local water-use bylaws in all York Region municipalities stipulate that odd house numbers may use water outdoors only on odd numbered days of the month and even house numbers may use water outdoors only on even numbered days of the month.

For more information visit the York Region Water Conservation page.

Conservation Efforts

Water for Tomorrow is York Region's water efficiency program. The goal is to save 19 million litres (4 million gallons) of water each and every day through promoting awareness and encouraging every person in York Region to use water wisely. For resources, publications and more information on this program, please visit Water for Tomorrow.

In addition to the regional program, the City of Vaughan has instituted a variety of operation and public programs to reduce water usage, protect the quality of our water and promote conservation including a comprehensive storm water management and drainage plan as well as a summer water use bylaw.

Clean Water

Did you know…?

  • Tap water in Vaughan is rigorously tested over 1,700 times per year by Vaughan's Certified Water Operators to ensure it is safe and clean.
  • Bottled water is not regulated to the same standards as municipally supplied tap water.
  • Tap water inexpensive to drink costing about 1/8th of a cent per litre.
  • Bottled water can cost up to $4 a litre, making it up to 3000 times more expensive than tap water.
  • Tap water does not generally come in a disposable container.
  • Although recyclable, up to 40% of single-use bottles end up in landfill due to inappropriate disposal.
Municipal tap water…why aren’t YOU drinking it?

In August 2000, the Province of Ontario passed new drinking water regulations. The "Drinking Water Protection Regulation" requires that the City of Vaughan, along with all other owners of water works across Ontario, to produce a quarterly report. This report will outline how the City of Vaughan receives its water, a description of the water works system, and show the summary results of our on-going water sampling.

Save more water and spend less money:

  • Install low flow showerheads, toilets and use aerators on faucets.
  • Take showers instead of baths.
  • Replacing the flush valve of an ordinary toilet with an early-closing flapper can improve its water efficiency. The flapper closes the valve when the tank has partially emptied — saving water with every flush.
  • Keep a pitcher of cold water in the fridge and don’t leave the tap run to get cold water.
  • Water your lawn in the cool part of the day, either early morning or early evening.
  • Sweep sidewalks and driveways clean instead of using a running hose.
  • Plant drought-resistant trees and plants.
