Winter Operations Maintenance

Fire hydrant Notice

KEEP SNOW AWAY FROM FIRE HYDRANTS!

The City has over 8,000 fire hydrants to maintain, and it takes a while to get around to clear the snow away from all of them. You can help by ensuring that you DO NOT pile snow on or around the fire hydrants!

If there is a fire hydrant in front of your house or business, please help yourself, your neighbours, and your municipality, by ensuring it is kept free and clear of snow at all times!

City of Vaughan Snow Clearing Crews Are Ready For Winter Weather

Keeping the City streets clear of snow is a big job! During the winter months (December – April), City patrollers are out checking road and sidewalk conditions, as well as monitoring weather forecasts. When the snow starts to fall, the City has a priority system for all winter operations.

Roads and Sidewalks are maintained in the following order:

  • Primary Roads / Sidewalks – High volume traffic
  • Secondary Roads / Sidewalks – Low volume traffic

It is the City’s goal to plough all streets in less than 16 hours, after the snowfall has ceased. During periods of heavy snowfall, ploughing operations can take longer.

To report problem areas, please call the SNOW Hotline at 905-879-SNOW (7669).

Check back here for frequent winter maintenance updates.

WINTER MAINTENANCE UPDATE

PUBLIC WORKS ACTIVITIES
PARKS OPERATIONS ACTIVITIES

Notes:
1. Primary routes may be ploughed or salted more than once during a storm. Once the primaries are deemed clear, only then will winter operations move to the secondary routes.
2. Weather and road conditions are closely monitored day and night.
3. City forces do not clear windrows created as a result of sidewalk ploughing operations.
4. Residents who blow or deposit snow on the roadway are in contravention of the Highway Traffic Act, and all complaints of such activities should be directed to York Region Police.
5. Crews will not be sent back to clear windrows where cars were parked too close to the curb, and windrow cleaning machines could not access the driveway.
Note:
1. All fire routes will be maintained throughout a storm.
2. Primary routes may be ploughed or salted more than once during a storm. Once the primaries are deemed clear, only then will winter operations move to the secondary routes.
