WOULD YOUR FAMILY SURVIVE A FIRE TONIGHT?

An hour of planning may save years of life. If your smoke alarm sounded in the middle of the night would you know how to evacuate safely? Would everyone in your family? We have practice fire drills in schools and work on a regular basis, yet how many of us do this at home where the majority of fire deaths occur?

Summer time is the perfect time to sit down with your family to plan and practice a home fire escape plan. Here are some tips to follow:

  1. Install a smoke alarm on every level of your house.
  2. Make sure everyone knows two routes out of each room.
  3. Never open doors that are hot to the touch.
  4. Select a meeting place outside and take attendance.
  5. Buy a collapsible ladder for escape from upper story windows.
  6. Practice feeling your way out of the house with your eyes closed.
  7. Remember to escape first, then call 9-1-1.

Be safe! Practice your home fire drill twice per year.
