| OUTDOOR WATER
USE (By-law 122-2003)
The City of Vaughan is committed to responsible municipal water
management. Included in the City's Outdoor Water Use By-Law (122-2003)
are a number of provisions to encourage conservation during the
summer months.
From May 15 to September 30 each year, the outdoor use of water
is restricted to ensure there is an adequate supply of water for
fire protection and personal consumption.
During this time period, lawn watering, filling of pools, washing
of cars, etc. is restricted as follows:

ODD HOUSE NUMBERS can only use outdoor water
on odd calendar days between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.;
and, 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

EVEN HOUSE NUMBERS can only use outdoor water
on even calendar days between 6 a.m. and 9
a.m.; and, 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Industrial/Commercial/Institutional properties
are restricted to watering for a maximum period of 3 hours,
between 12:00 a.m. and 7 a.m.
During times when the City of Vaughan needs to restrict water use,
restrictions will be implemented in stages:

Should a "Water Advisory" be issued, all residents
will be asked to voluntarily refrain from any
such outdoor water use.

Should an "Outdoor Water Use Ban" be enacted,
the outdoor use of water is prohibited, and
residents found in contravention to the ban will be charged.
The maximum fine for contravening an Outdoor Water Use Ban issued
under By-law 122-2003 is $5,000.
Please note that exemptions are in place for certain businesses
and functions; and in all cases, freshly laid sod and newly planted
shrubs and trees are exempt from such restrictions for a 4-week
period.

REGION
OF YORK
The Regional Municipality of York, the supplier of water to the
City of Vaughan, uses a three-stage system in the event that water
reservoir levels drop to a point where water restrictions are necessary
and may issue an advisory at any time to municipalities with the
Region of York.
STAGE 1: OUTDOOR WATER USE ADVISORY
The Stage 1 Outdoor Water Use Advisory requests all persons refrain
from using municipal water from a hose, pipe, sprinkler or permanent
irrigation system for the purposes of watering lawns or gardens,
washing vehicles, sidewalks or driveways, and filling or topping
up swimming pools.
STAGE 2: OUTDOOR WATER USE BAN
The Stage 2 Outdoor Water Use Ban states no person shall use municipal
water from a hose, pipe, sprinkler or permanent irrigation system
for the purposes of watering lawns or gardens, washing vehicles,
sidewalks or driveways, and filling or topping up swimming pools.

Nurseries
-
Commercial or industrial facilities utilizing timed irrigation
systems will be permitted to operate between 12 a.m. and 6 p.m.
on a once per week basis

All-weather playing fields if failure to water will result
in a permanent loss of plant material or public safety
-
Washing exterior building surfaces, including windows, parking
lots, driveways or sidewalks prior to application of a product
such as paint, preservative, stucco, or preparation of a surface
prior to paving or repointing of bricks, or if required by law
to comply with health and safety regulations
-
Commercial car washes or car dealerships
-
During a Stage 1 Outdoor Water Use Advisory and a Stage 2 Outdoor
Water Use Ban, public sector entities may operate public water
play areas between the hours of 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Other uses as identified by the individual area municipalities.

The City of Vaughan's Outdoor Water Use By-law 122-2003 mirrors
these two stages in order to ensure that adequate water is available
to all City residents for fire protection and personal consumption.
The maximum fine for contravening the Outdoor Water Use Ban
issued under By-law 122-2003 is $5,000.
